The chlorinator, cell, pump and water chemistry all need to work together.
What pool sanitation really means
Sanitation is the process of controlling bacteria, algae and other contaminants introduced by swimmers, leaves, rain, dust and wildlife. Chlorine is the primary sanitiser in most residential pools because it works continuously when the level is maintained correctly.
The common mistake is treating chlorine as the only number that matters. Chlorine is less effective when pH is too high, stabiliser is out of range, the pump is not running long enough or the chlorinator cell is scaled or worn out. A clean-looking pool can also have low active chlorine, particularly after heavy use.

How saltwater chlorination keeps water clean
A saltwater chlorinator passes a low-voltage electrical current through its cell. The cell converts dissolved salt into chlorine, which sanitises the water before returning to salt and repeating the cycle. The salt stays in the pool unless it is lost through splash-out, backwashing, leaks or dilution from rain.
This approach gives pool owners a steadier chlorine supply than occasional manual additions. It can also make ongoing maintenance easier, provided the unit is correctly sized and the cell is in good condition.
A chlorinator cannot compensate for every problem. If the pool has a high swimmer load, warm water, poor circulation or an algae outbreak, you may need to temporarily increase output or add supplementary chlorine. A cell has a working lifespan. As its coating wears, chlorine production drops even when the unit appears to run normally. Test the water at least once or twice a week in normal conditions. - Free chlorine: This is the chlorine available to sanitise the pool. If it is too low, bacteria and algae can gain a foothold. If it is consistently too high, it can irritate eyes and skin and place unnecessary demand on equipment.
- pH: Chlorine works best within its recommended pH range. High pH reduces chlorine effectiveness and can encourage scale on the chlorinator cell, while low pH can be corrosive to surfaces and equipment.
- Total alkalinity: This helps prevent pH from swinging too quickly. Correct alkalinity makes pH easier to manage.
- Stabiliser or cyanuric acid: Stabiliser protects chlorine from being rapidly consumed by UV exposure. Too little can leave outdoor pools struggling in strong sun, while too much can make chlorine less responsive.
- Salt level: Keep salt within the chlorinator manufacturer’s specified range. More salt does not mean more chlorine production, and excessive salt can create its own problems.
- Calcium hardness: Calcium needs to be managed to limit scaling or corrosive water. This matters especially for cell life, tiled finishes and heating equipment.

Give the pump and filter enough time
Your chlorinator only produces chlorine while water flows through the cell. A short pump schedule can leave you with a healthy-looking cell that simply does not get enough operating time to sanitise the full water volume.
In warmer months, many pools need longer daily filtration and chlorination than they do in winter. The exact schedule depends on pool size, bather load, pump flow rate, sun exposure and water temperature. If chlorine is repeatedly low despite correct chemistry and a functioning cell, increase run time before assuming the unit has failed.
Keep skimmer baskets and pump baskets clear, and clean the filter according to its type and pressure reading. Restricted flow reduces circulation, weakens chlorination and can trigger flow-related chlorinator faults.
Clean the cell carefully, not constantly
Salt cells naturally develop some build-up, especially where water is hard or pH has been allowed to drift high. Inspect the cell regularly through the clear housing if fitted. Fine white scale on the plates is a sign that cleaning may be required.
Do not acid-clean a cell as routine maintenance just because it is on the calendar. Repeated or overly strong acid cleaning can damage the cell coating and reduce its useful life. Clean only when scale is visible or the manufacturer directs it, using the recommended method and dilution.
If scaling returns quickly, the real fix is usually in the water balance. Correcting pH, calcium hardness and alkalinity is better value than repeatedly cleaning or replacing cells early.
Respond quickly after heavy use and bad weather
A dozen kids in the pool, a hot spell or a summer storm can use up chlorine faster than normal. Organic debris, sunscreen, sweat and rainwater all increase the sanitation load. Remove leaves and debris promptly, test the water and adjust chlorinator output or run time where needed.
If the pool starts to look dull, has a chlorine demand that will not hold or shows early algae on steps and walls, do not wait for it to turn green. Brush surfaces, check filter performance, test the full water balance and apply an appropriate corrective treatment. A quick response is usually cheaper than a major recovery job.
Avoid the two expensive shortcuts
The first shortcut is adding chemicals without testing. This can push pH, stabiliser or salt out of balance and make the original problem harder to diagnose. The second is replacing an entire chlorinator when only the cell has reached the end of its life.
A replacement cell is often the sensible answer when the power supply and housing are sound but production has fallen away. Genuine and compatible aftermarket options can both be worthwhile, but compatibility and warranty should guide the decision, not price alone.
