A new chlorinator cell should restore chlorine production, but pool water clarity after cell replacement is not always instant. If the pool has been under-chlorinated for days or weeks, the water may already contain algae spores, fine debris and a growing contaminant load. After fitting the new cell, the chlorinator needs enough run time to create a useful chlorine reserve. In hot Australian weather, heavy swimming, rain, leaves and dust can consume chlorine as quickly as it is produced. A pool that looks dull after replacement may simply need a manual chlorine boost or shock treatment to get ahead of the existing demand.

Water clarity also relies on the filter catching what sanitiser kills. Chlorine deals with organic contamination, while the filter removes the fine particles that make the water look milky. Start with the right replacement cell and installation

Compatibility matters. A cell can look similar to the old one but have different lead connections, housing length, output rating or control requirements. Installing the wrong cell can result in low output readings, error messages or no chlorine production at all.

Before turning the system back on, confirm the replacement cell suits your chlorinator model and that the leads are clean, dry and firmly connected. Check the water balance before judging the new cell

Also test total alkalinity and stabiliser. Alkalinity helps prevent pH from bouncing around. Stabiliser, often called cyanuric acid, protects chlorine from being rapidly destroyed by sunlight. Too little stabiliser means the sun can burn through chlorine quickly. Too much can slow chlorine’s sanitising action, leaving the pool looking tired despite an acceptable chlorine test. The correct range depends on your pool and local conditions, so follow your chemical product directions and chlorinator guidance.

If the water is green, very cloudy or has little to no free chlorine, use a suitable shock treatment first. Run the pump continuously during the recovery period if practical, brush the pool surfaces and keep testing. The new cell can then maintain the result instead of trying to overcome an established algae problem on its own.

Give filtration the attention it deserves

Cloudiness after cell replacement is often a filtration issue hiding in plain sight. The cell may now be creating chlorine properly, but dead algae, dust and very fine particles still need to be captured and removed.

Backwash a sand or media filter when the pressure indicates it is due, then rinse before returning to normal filtration. Clean cartridge elements carefully if you have a cartridge filter. A cartridge that looks reasonably clean can still be loaded with oils and fine debris, so use an appropriate cleaner when needed. For glass or sand media filters that consistently pass cloudy water, the media condition and multiport valve may need inspection.

Run the pump long enough for the pool volume, weather and swimmer load. There is no single run-time setting that suits every pool. A shaded pool with light use may need less time than a sun-exposed family pool during a hot spell. As a practical starting point, make sure the water has adequate daily turnover and increase run time while clearing cloudiness.

Brush the walls, steps and floor before or during the recovery process. This disrupts algae films and lifts settled debris into the water so the sanitiser and filter can deal with it. Vacuum visible debris out of the pool rather than expecting the chlorinator to solve it.

What to check if the water is still cloudy after a few days

If chlorine is holding in range, pH is balanced and the filter has been cleaned, the water should show a clear improvement within a few days. If it does not, work through the likely causes rather than adding chemicals at random.

First, inspect the new cell while the system is off. Fine white scale across the plates can reduce output, particularly in hard-water areas. Only clean the cell when scaling is visible and use the cleaning method recommended for that cell. Frequent acid washing shortens cell life, so avoid making it a routine habit.

Then verify actual chlorine production. Test the pool water before the system runs and again after a normal operating period. If free chlorine is not increasing and the water chemistry is correct, check for error codes, insufficient salt, poor water flow, damaged cables or a controller setting that is limiting output.

Consider the chlorine demand as well. A pool can lose chlorine rapidly because of algae, a high stabiliser level, heavy use, warm water or an accumulation of contaminants. In these cases, the cell may be working exactly as it should, but the pool requires a one-off recovery treatment and more filtration before it can settle into normal maintenance.

Fine suspended particles can also need a clarifier or flocculant, but these products are not interchangeable. A clarifier helps the filter capture tiny particles over time. A flocculant drops particles to the floor for vacuuming to waste and may not suit every filter setup. Use them only when the basic chemistry and filtration checks are already in order.

Keep the new cell producing clear-pool results

Once the water is clear, do not let the system return to set-and-forget mode. Test chlorine and pH regularly, especially through summer. Empty skimmer baskets, keep the filter maintained and adjust output or pump time when swimmer numbers, heat or weather change.

Inspect the cell periodically for scale, but clean only when required. Keep a simple record of salt additions, test results and output settings. It makes seasonal adjustments easier and helps identify a genuine equipment issue before the water turns cloudy again.
