A chlorinator can look like it has failed when the real problem is simply a worn-out cell. Before replacing the whole unit, learn how to identify chlorinator cell model details correctly. A matching replacement cell can restore chlorine production for a fraction of the cost of a complete new system – but only if you order the right one.

The good news is that identifying a cell is usually straightforward once you know where to look. The label on the power supply is helpful, but it is not always enough. Cell shape, cable connection, plate configuration and dimensions all matter when confirming compatibility.

Start with the chlorinator power supply

Your chlorinator controller or power supply is the first place to check. Look for a model name, model number or serial label, usually found on the side, underside or rear of the unit. Write down every detail exactly as it appears, including letters, numbers and suffixes.

Common Australian pool brands have model families that use different cells across different years. A controller label may identify the brand and series, but a single series can sometimes use more than one cell size or lead type. That is why the controller model is a starting point, not a guarantee.

If the label is faded, take a clear photo before attempting to clean it. Avoid solvents or abrasive pads, as they can remove the remaining information. A photo of the complete power supply, including the display and buttons, can also help identify older units where the label has become unreadable.

How to identify chlorinator cell model from the cell itself

Turn the chlorinator off at the power supply before inspecting the cell. Isolate the equipment if you need to disconnect wiring, and never handle the cell with wet hands around electrical connections.

Remove the cell housing or inspect it through the clear chamber, depending on the design. Many cells have a model number moulded into the plastic end cap, printed on a label, or stamped near the cable entry point. Check both ends of the cell body. On older cells, the identifier may be hidden beneath dirt, salt residue or scale.

Use a soft cloth and fresh water to clean the outside of the cell. Do not use acid just to reveal a model number. Acid cleaning is for scale removal only, and over-cleaning a cell can shorten its service life.

When no label is visible, identify the cell by its physical features. The most useful details are:

  • the brand and model shown on the controller
  • the cell body shape and overall length
  • the type of cable, plug or terminal connection
  • the number and orientation of electrode plates
  • unions, threaded ends or the style of housing connection
  • any numbers moulded into the end caps or housing

A clear photo of the cell beside a tape measure is often more useful than a rough measurement written from memory. Photograph the full cell, both ends, the lead and plug, and the internal plates where possible.

Count plates, but do not rely on plate count alone

The electrode plates inside a salt cell are a useful clue. Some replacement cells are identified partly by the number of plates, while others share a plate count but differ in length, coating specification or connection type.

Count the visible plates carefully without forcing anything into the cell. Then use that count alongside the cell dimensions and controller model. A plate count by itself is not enough to order a replacement with confidence.

The same applies to chlorine output ratings. A 25-gram or 35-gram output rating can narrow the options, but replacement-cell compatibility must still be confirmed against the original system. Bigger is not automatically better if the cell does not suit the controller.

Check the cable and connection style

Cell leads are one of the easiest ways to avoid an expensive mismatch. Some chlorinator cells use a hard-wired lead, while others have a plug connection. Plugs may look similar but have different pin layouts, locking collars or cable lengths.

Do not assume a cell will fit because the body slides into the same plumbing. The controller needs to communicate and supply power correctly to the cell. A physically similar cell with the wrong lead can cause error messages, poor chlorine output or no operation at all.

Look closely at whether the lead exits from the end cap or side of the cell, whether it is permanently attached, and how it joins the power supply. If the original cell lead is damaged but the cell is otherwise functional, speak with a chlorinator specialist before replacing anything. In many cases, a damaged lead and a depleted cell can look like the same fault.

Measure the cell and plumbing connections

Replacement cells need to fit your existing plumbing as well as your chlorinator controller. Measure the exposed cell body, not just the clear housing. Note the distance between the union faces, the diameter of the connections and whether the ends are threaded or use unions.

Australian pool plumbing is commonly 40 mm or 50 mm, but do not order on that detail alone. A cell can suit 50 mm pipe yet still be wrong for your particular chlorinator model.

If the cell sits inside a proprietary housing, photograph the housing as well. Some brands use a cell that looks generic at first glance but requires a specific cap, o-ring position or locking arrangement. Reusing the wrong o-ring or forcing an incorrect cell into the housing risks leaks and can damage the cell body.

Do not confuse a cell fault with a water-balance problem

A low-salt warning, no-flow message or low-chlorine reading does not automatically mean the cell is dead. Before buying a replacement, check the basic causes of reduced output: salt level, water temperature, stabiliser level, pump run time, flow, scale and the cell setting on the controller.

Cold water can reduce chlorine production. Heavy bather loads, rain, high temperatures and a pool that has gone green can also demand more chlorine than the system can produce during its usual run time. A healthy cell may appear weak when the pool simply needs a manual chlorine boost and water balancing.

That said, cells are consumable components. Most eventually lose their coating and generate less chlorine even when they look clean. If your pool chemistry is correct, flow is good and the controller keeps reporting low output, a replacement cell is often the sensible fix.

Genuine or compatible replacement cell?

Once you have identified the model, you may have a choice between a genuine branded replacement and a compatible aftermarket cell. The right decision depends on the age of the system, the availability of the original part and your budget.

A quality compatible cell can be excellent value when it is specifically designed for your chlorinator model and supplied with a clear warranty. It lets you keep a functioning controller and plumbing setup rather than paying to replace an entire chlorinator unnecessarily. This is particularly worthwhile when the power supply is still operating reliably.

However, compatibility claims need to be specific. Avoid buying a cell described only as suitable for a broad brand name. Confirm the exact controller model, connection style and cell configuration first. Also mention any fault codes displayed by the controller and whether the old cell has been cleaned or tested. This gives the adviser a better chance of identifying whether you need a replacement cell, a different part or a water-balance correction.
